Few cigar lovers boast that they have visited the Casa del Habano at the National Hotel, but this great store is definitely worth a visit. We have found that it has large stocks of cigarettes and a source of some of them that you may not find elsewhere. El Nacional itself is a majestic hotel, standing on top of a cliff overlooking the boardwalk like a castle of yesteryear. The hotel attracts more vintage cars than any other place in Cuba, and if you are looking for a ride on a Chevy Bel Air ’59 or ’55 T-Bird this is the place to find one. Walk inside the main entrance of the hotel, right and right again, and you will find Casa del Habano on your left. Above you could see a twister at work and a large selection of wine and rum. Go down the stairs and you will find the cigars.
 
Perhaps the biggest crime of this cigar shop is its lack of soul. The best stores in Havana are warm, cozy places, but the store in the National is a bit clinical. Never mind. Treat it as a place to buy, and buy well and you are not likely to be disappointed.
 
Store workers usually leave the buyer alone. The store had the entire line of Cohiba (with the exception of Cohiba Behike), Montecristo and a particularly strong representation of Romeo and Juliet, a table in the main humidor with all the current crop of Limited Edition, Añejados and the new Hole of Monterrey Le Hole of San Juan (89 points, 243.75 CUC). Each box of pure cigars has the unit price, which requires some calculations in its head to calculate the price of an entire box.
 
El Nacional has several glass shelves that store cigars. It was the only store we saw in Havana with Partagás Serie D No. 6 for sale. There are places to smoke inside this cigar store, but we still have to see someone here smoking. El Nacional has been blessed with one of the best places in Cuba to enjoy a cigar, its back porch. With a place just a few steps away, who would smoke inside?
