The best-selling vitola on the market is Montecristo No. 4, which makes these cigars the most popular in the world, with 31 percent of total sales. This brand owes its name to the most acclaimed book among the twists: Montecristo, by Alejandro Dumas.
It is remarkable how in the cigar factories, where the crooks assemble each of the cigarettes by hand, the custom was extended, perhaps coming from the Jesuits (first tobacco workers) to read books or news to entertain the monotonous manual labor. Created in 1935, its vitolas received numbers from 1 to 5 in the beginning, and then were completed in the early 70's. In 2009, the new Montecristo Open line extended the offer with its Eagle, Regatta, Master and Junior vitolas, always from medium to strong flavor.
The brand was created in 1875, and at the end of that same century had already introduced a fundamental change in production, which would later become essential in all brands: the design of the añillas and the tubes, which currently represent authenticity of each line.
