Description

Embark on a guided hike along Madeira Island’s North Coast, one of the island’s most impressive coastal routes. Begin your journey in Caniçal, heading west along the historic Boca do Risco Trail, carved into the cliffs high above the Atlantic Ocean. As you follow this remarkable path, the scenery unfolds dramatically — to the right, the vast Atlantic stretches to the horizon; to the left, steep rocky mountains rise, their upper slopes covered in Laurisilva forest, shaped by wind and time. The trail leads you steadily to the starting point of the Larano Trail, where the route continues along the island’s rugged north coast. Enjoy a moderate hike with no major ascents, though some narrow and exposed sections require attention and steady footing. Along the way, the sound of the waves blends with birdsong and the stillness of the cliffs, inviting a slower pace and quiet contemplation. The hike ends in Porto da Cruz, one of the highlights of the journey. After several hours walking between sea and mountains, the trail descends into one of Madeira’s most picturesque villages, surrounded by vineyards and dominated by the striking Penha d’Águia rock formation.
