Mercaderes Street has been completely restored by the Office of the Historian of Old Havana. It is currently paved and pedestrian, and constitutes an almost complete replica of the original street dating from the eighteenth century.
The street is full of museums, shops, restaurants and fantastic social projects, such as the maternity home. Almost all the outstanding museums and buildings located on this street are free of charge, among them are: the Asian House Museum, with paintings and sculptures from China; the Tobacco Museum, the Armory Museum April 9, the Firefighters Museum, the House of Africa Museum, where sacred objects of santeria are housed; the Chocolate House Museum, the Simón Bolívar House Museum, and the Oswaldo Guayasamín House Museum.

The street houses other interesting museums and places (for a fee, although at a more than reasonable price), among which the Maqueta Museum of Old Havana, the Benito Juárez House Museum, or the Casa de la Obra Pía.
At the crossroads between Calle Mercaderes and Obrapía, it has a more international atmosphere, and houses a bronze statue Simón Bolívar, the liberator of Latin America.
